CITYSEARCH – THE SCENE

“Crave blintzes at midnight or corned beef and cabbage at sunrise? This is your place. Cops from next door rub shoulders with families, politicos and all walks of colorful Montrose life at this brick-paved double-decker. Complete with subway artifacts and Grand Central Station-style handrails, it’s city slick, not as seasoned as the cool capital-of-Texas original.
THE FOOD
The trademark Reuben will please you, with its fleshy stack of peppery pastrami, melted Swiss and zippy-sweet Russian dressing. Chunky chicken salad disenchants (watery), but matzo ball soup is as soothing as your grandmother’s. Potato pancakes? Swoon material. Katz’s “never kloses” but perhaps should pause to refresh drying pumpernickel and droopy coleslaw. Nevertheless, New York cheesecake is always on. If you can’t commit to a slice, slurp the killingly rich cheesecake shake. Beware: A full serving of cheesecake is whirled in.”

“Dedicated fressers need not fear when a wee-hour matzo ball craving hits. You can’t take a N.Y.C. taxi to get there, but Katz’s brings Manhattan to Montrose 24/7 with a weighty selection of deli “greatest hits.” Jewish rye is jacked up with extra caraway, baton-sized kosher pickles are super garlicky, and the cole slaw has enough vinegar to cut through all the fat in a half-pound pastrami Reuben. The sandwiches are pricey, but they are so enormous that you won’t miss the fries. After the binge, the Death By Chocolate dessert hopefully doesn’t live up to its name.”

HOUSTON PRESS

“You can’t go wrong with a salad plate with chopped liver or egg salad, a stack of fresh rye bread and some pickles at Katz’s, especially late at night. The Reuben is their specialty.”

HOUSTON PRESS – CHEESECAKE SHAKE

“The cheesecake milk shake is no ordinary milk shake. It is liquid ecstasy. To make it, Katz’s mixes a large slice of creamy New York-style cheesecake with two large scoops of vanilla ice cream and ice-cold whole milk. (Skim milk? Are you kidding?) Then they whirl it all together and top it off with — what else? — whipped cream. The result is an extra-thick, bone-chilling drink/dessert with large chunks of cheesecake that won’t fit through any straw.”
